RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - More than a dozen additional animal cruelty charges have been filed against the former owners of a Hoke County animal shelter where at least 600 animals were found in conditions that the sheriff called “awful and very sad.”

The Fayetteville Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1ZkIweT) authorities say 60-year-old Linden Spear and 69 year-old Stephen Spear each face 17 counts of animal cruelty charges and three counts each of possession of a controlled substance related to an unauthorized animal medication. Thirteen of the animal cruelty charges were added Thursday.

Hoke County Sheriff’s Office Capt. John Kivett didn’t say why the additional charges came about four months after the initial arrest in January.

The Spears are free on a $2,000 bail tied to the additional charges. It’s not known if they have an attorney.
