COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Columbus police say a man has been charged with murder in the death of his landlord, who was shot and later found in a burning garage.

The Columbus Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/25GkHW0 ) that 33-year-old Maurice Watkins of Columbus was charged in the slaying of 50-year-old Joseph Remlinger. Court records show Remlinger was trying to evict Watkins and had brought eviction proceedings against him last month.

Police say Watkins has confessed to the shooting.

Court records indicate Watkins has been assigned a public defender, whose office was closed Saturday.

A Franklin County judge set bond for Watkins at $2 million.

Watkins and another man were taken into police custody Thursday after firefighters extinguished a garage fire and found Remlinger’s body.

Police say they are planning to file an arson charge against the other man.
