RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Raeford man killed his wife, then shot himself in an attempt to cover up the crime.

The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office tells local media outlets that 31-year-old Nicholas Marshall was charged Friday with first-degree murder.

Authorities say 36-year-old Sheryl Dianne Marshall was found dead Tuesday afternoon at a home. Deputies say her husband had asked authorities to check on her because she had been assaulted.

Later, Nicholas Marshall called authorities again to report he had been shot while driving several miles away. But deputies say he had actually shot himself.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Nicholas Marshall had an attorney or if he had been released from the hospital.
