HANOVER, Pa. (AP) - Police in central Pennsylvania say a man beat his roommate to death over the weekend after the two were drinking and smoking crack together.

Police say Walter Smith, Jr. attacked Mitchell Jones on Saturday after an argument broke out between the two in their Hanover apartment, about 30 miles south of Harrisburg.

Smith told police Jones had tried to stab him with a screwdriver.

Jones was found in an upstairs bedroom with serious head injuries and a black plastic bag over his head.

Adams County prosecutors say Smith faces charges including criminal homicide and aggravated assault.

Smith is jailed without bail in Gettysburg. A preliminary hearing is planned next week.

It’s not known if Smith has a lawyer who can comment on the charges.
