LAUREL, Del. (AP) - Authorities say one man was killed and another was seriously injured when a car crashed near Laurel.

Delaware State Police said in a release that the crash occurred Sunday night on Sharptown Road when an eastbound Nissan Altima failed to negotiate a curve and left the road. The car went down an embankment, where police say it hit a utility pole and trees, then spun around and returned to the road.

Police say 31-year-old Alvaro De Jesus Garcia of Laurel was not properly restrained and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say his passenger, 19-year-old Henry Ortiz Escalante of Laurel, was thrown from the car and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police say it is not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
