MOSCOW (AP) - Russia midfielder Artur Yusupov says he has been called up to the national team for the European Championship as a replacement for the injured Igor Denisov.

Denisov, a veteran Dynamo Moscow midfielder, will return to Russia after tearing a thigh muscle during Russia’s final warm-up game, Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Serbia.

Yusupov, whose only two national team appearances came in friendlies, told Russian media he was vacationing in Monaco when he was summoned to Russia’s training base in Paris.

The Zenit St. Petersburg player told state news agencies the call was “a bolt from the blue,” adding that he had to borrow a teammate’s spare boots for training Monday.

Besides Denisov, Russia is missing injured midfielders Alan Dzagoev and Denis Cheryshev, and defenders Yuri Zhirkov and Oleg Kuzmin.
