AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The state of Maine has launched an investigation into allegations that chickens were abused at an egg farm in Turner.

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry made the announcement on Wednesday, a day after an animal welfare group released undercover video of what it called cruel conditions at New England’s largest egg-producing farm.

The agency said in a statement that the farm is regularly inspected and that the eggs are safe for human consumption.

The farm is operated by Pennsylvania-based Hillandale Farms and owned by Jack DeCoster. Hillandale, which owns 10 egg production facilities nationwide, said it’s investigating and will address any problems immediately.
