PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The man who police say shot and killed a masked intruder at his Providence home has been arraigned on felony marijuana charges.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1OdwMKs) Juan Mejia was ordered held without bail Wednesday on charges of possessing one to five kilos of marijuana and related crimes.

The 30-year-old Mejia is not charged in the shooting death of Robert Aitchison. Investigators believe the 26-year-old Aitchison was attempting to rob Mejia of his marijuana when he was killed Tuesday.

Police say a search of Mejia’s property turned up numerous marijuana plants. They say Mejia has a medical marijuana caregiver card but exceeded the legal limit of marijuana he could grow.

Mejia’s attorney argued in court that the plants are allowed under state law.

He’s due back in court June 22.
