MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) - A Riverside County boy remains hospitalized a week after nearly drowning during a pool party for a middle school’s band and choir members.

A Murrieta Valley Unified School District spokeswoman says 13-year-old Alex Pierce is still in critical condition Thursday.

Police say the student from Dorothy McElhinney Middle School was under water for about 95 seconds on June 3 before he was pulled to the surface of the pool at Vista Murrieta High School.

Paramedics performed CPR and rushed him to a hospital.

Police say surveillance video showed that the boy apparently floated to the deeper end of the pool where he could no longer stand up. The video showed no evidence of horseplay.

Police say the event was chaperoned by parent and faculty volunteers, and high school student lifeguards.
