CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A Cedar Rapids woman has pleaded guilty in a scheme to defraud an elderly Illinois couple out of thousands of dollars.

Federal prosecutors say 36-year-old Tea Ware pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to two counts of mail fraud and one count of using a fictitious name.

Ware admitted that from September 2015 through February 2016 she would call an elderly woman and falsely tell her that she had won a lottery or sweepstakes and would receive a large sum of money.

The woman was told she could claim her winnings only if she mailed Ware money for taxes or fees.

Ware admitted she received $29,000 in two checks from the woman and her husband. She agreed to pay the money back in full.

Ware will be sentenced later.
