RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Harrisonburg Councilman Kai Degner is officially a candidate for congress.

Media outlets report the local Democratic committee formally selected Degner on Tuesday to be the party’s candidate in the 6th Congressional District.

Degner’s selection comes as Warren County Democrat Tom Howarth recently withdrew his candidacy because of health reasons.

Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte has held the 6th District, which stretches from the northern Shenandoah Valley to the Roanoke area, since 1992. He is facing a primary challenger, Roanoke County-based pilot Harry Griego.
