LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Long Beach harbor has a powerful new fireboat designed for the era of supersized container ships.

The Long Beach Fire Department on Wednesday formally dedicated the vessel named Protector.

The Port of Long Beach says the fireboat has 10 water cannons and can spray 41,000 gallons of water per minute across the length of two football fields.

That’s four times the volume of 1988-vintage fireboats currently serving the port.

The Protector also has capabilities to address spills and chemical, biological and radiological emergencies, among others.

The twin harbors of Long Beach and Los Angeles are the nation’s busiest port complex.
