SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a 24-year-old man accused of DUI tried to bribe an Atlanta-area police officer with cash and beer after being pulled over.

Smyrna Police Chief Robert Harvey tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://bit.ly/1U8perQ ) that Lazaro Hernandez of Marietta was pulled over early Friday after he tried to pass an officer who was directing traffic.

Police say Hernandez smelled of alcohol and asked the officer to drop his charges from DUI to another charge, offering to have the officer drive him to a gas station so he could buy beer for him and give him $400.

Hernandez tells the newspaper he was “drunk” and does not remember offering the officer money. He says he “was just playing.”

Hernandez faces numerous charges, including DUI and bribery, a felony.
