BOSTON (AP) - Prosecutors say a Boston Police officer has agreed to plead guilty to a charge in connection with a shoplifting ring.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 38-year-old Eddie Odney was charged with one count of access device fraud on Wednesday.

Odney agreed to plead guilty and resign, according to a plea agreement.

Prosecutors say Odney purchased about $5,000 worth of gift cards that he believed were obtained from the return of stolen merchandise at department stores and supermarkets.

They say he used the cards to make more than $1,600 in purchases. Prosecutors didn’t say what he did with the remaining balance.

Odney’s attorney couldn’t immediately be reached.

The Boston Globe reports that the attorney didn’t respond to requests on Wednesday for comment on behalf of Odney, a nine-year veteran of the force.
