RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) - A Ridgeland man is charged with murder in the shooting death of his wife in an incident police say happened when the couple’s eight children were at home.

Sgt. Chris McIntosh of the Ridgeland Police Department tells local media that 37-year-old Richard Passio, Jr. was arrested Tuesday. It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney.

Passio is charged in the June 3 shooting death of 33-year-old Michelle Passio who was found on a couch in the couple’s home with a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities say Passio called dispatchers saying his wife was unresponsive after a series of gunshots. He was charged after the investigation was discussed with prosecutors.

The children range in age from 6 weeks to 13 years and are staying with relatives.
