BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem has banned a Florida man’s sham credit card interest reduction operation from doing business in North Dakota.

Stenehjem said Thursday that Clarence “Harry” Wahl and his wife were leaving illegal pre-recorded messages with sham offers to lower consumers’ credit card interest rates.

The scams have been circulating in North Dakota for years. The phony offer requires a consumer to pay an advance fee to get a lower interest rate, but the scam artist simply takes the money.

Stenehjem says the con artists target people outside of their own state to stay ahead of authorities long enough to cash in.
