MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York prosecutor has filed murder, assault and other charges stemming from a crash that killed one pedestrian and injured two others.

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas says 22-year-old Shania Buchanan of Hempstead was arraigned Thursday. She was remanded pending a bail hearing after pleading not guilty.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Groder says he needs to investigate and interview witnesses but concedes the charges are “extremely serious.”

Prosecutors say Buchanan drove her SUV into a group of people in Hempstead following a fight involving a family member last April.

A 56-year-old woman who was struck and dragged later died of her injuries. Two others were injured.

Buchanan could face up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted of the depraved indifference murder charge.
