LAS VEGAS (AP) - Police say a man shot and wounded in the shoulder by a veteran Las Vegas police sergeant responding to a report of someone pointing a gun at passing traffic was wielding a replica handgun.
Officer Larry Hadfield said Tuesday the wounded man was expected to recover after the 8 p.m. Monday shooting near Haven Street and Struzzo Avenue. That’s several miles south of the Las Vegas Strip.
Hadfield says the sergeant shot the man when he failed to comply with commands in English and Spanish to drop the weapon.
Police say the man’s injury wasn’t life-threatening.
His name wasn’t immediately made public.
The name of the police sergeant is expected to be made public tomorrow. He’s been placed on paid leave pending departmental and district attorney reviews of the shooting.
