DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say a retired Detroit police sergeant shot at two men trying to break into his house.

Police say the former officer was in the living room of his west-side home Tuesday afternoon when he heard noises at the back door. He confronted the men trying to pry off a screen and fired three shots at them during a struggle.

One of the suspects was taken to a hospital and the other ran off.

The nature of their injuries wasn’t known.
