GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska State Patrol says a 32-year-old man has been plotting to kill his estranged wife and hired another man to commit the crime.

State Patrol Spokeswoman Deb Collins said Tuesday that both Robert Honken and the man he hired initially, 30-year-old Derrick Shirley, had been arrested. Honken’s wife, who filed for divorce last fall, and their three children are OK.

An undercover State Patrol officer contacted Honken, who is from Aurora on Monday. The two met and authorities say Honken paid the undercover officer to kill his wife.

Authorities arrested Honken after he left that meeting. They also arrested Shirley, of Bradshaw, after learning that Honken had earlier paid Shirley to kill his wife.

Neither man has an attorney listed in court records who could comment for them.
