SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Instead of celebrating a state championship win, some basketball players from a Utah high school say they have been distracted by racist comments hurled at them during and after the game.

Sam Velez of Draper’s Summit Academy says students from the opposing school started cheering “USA, USA,” as though Velez and his teammates weren’t American.

Summit coach Evric Gray says he also heard comments about the team not speaking English. Gray says it isn’t the first time he’s heard racial slurs during a game.

Emery High School coach Todd Jeffs says he didn’t hear any racially motivated comments. He says he noticed the “USA” chanting but didn’t think it was related to race.

Summit players say the trouble continued after the game, with Emery students displaying the confederate flag and using racial slurs.
