RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Federal labor officials have issued a citation against a poultry processing company after an employee lost part of his finger in an accident.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials said in a statement Thursday that Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. is being cited after a 53-year-old employee in Russellville lost part of his middle finger when he was trying to reassemble a machine that separates chicken parts. Officials say the machine unexpectedly started while he was working on it.

OSHA officials say Pilgrim’s Pride was cited for failing to train workers to prevent machinery from starting during maintenance, and the company had been cited for the same violation in 2010.

OSHA has proposed a $77,000 fine.

Company spokesman Cameron Bruett says safety is a priority and the company takes the citation seriously.
