BRYAN, Texas (AP) - Former Texas A&M; band director Joe T. Haney, who led the Aggie Band for 16 years and composed the anthem “Noble Men of Kyle,” has died at age 88.

Jay Brewer, a Haney friend and successor as Aggie Band director, told The Eagle (https://bit.ly/1Mar8Cg) of Bryan-College Station that Haney died Thursday after several years with Alzheimer’s disease. A call from The Associated Press to Brewer’s home brought no answer.

The World War II veteran and former A&M; student directed high school bands before assuming the Aggie Band helm in 1973. He remained in that position until 1989. The band’s drill field was named for Haney.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday evening at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. A Monday afternoon memorial is scheduled for the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan.
