George Patton’s grandson said Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is nothing like his grandfather, despite the candidate’s numerous attempts to liken himself to the late general.

“We need Gen. Patton,” Mr. Trump said in January, USA Today reported. “We need great people. These were people who won.”

In a statement declaring his support for Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Navy veteran George Patton Waters said, “Mr. Trump, you are no Patton.”

“It’s true that my grandfather was known for his controversial statements and aggressive leadership, but he was also known for his honor and toil for a righteous cause. He put his men and mission above himself every time,” Mr. Waters said.

“My grandfather was a fighter, and he would have been proud of Marco Rubio’s fight against Donald Trump,” he continued. “When Marco gets hit, he hits back. My grandfather once said, ‘We got through on good old American guts.’ That will be the story of Marco Rubio after he wins here in Florida. I am proud to support him as he makes a stand for America’s future.”

The statement comes just days before the March 15 primary in Mr. Rubio’s home state, a contest analysts say could make or break his campaign, USA Today reported.
