LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - The University of Wyoming reports a preliminary spring semester enrollment of 12,341 students.

This year’s spring enrollment is down 286 students from the spring 2015 semester, mainly because of a drop in the number of part-time students.

UW Vice President for Student Affairs Sara Axelson says the overall enrollment may be down, but she noted that the number of first-time freshmen returning for the spring semester increased by 94 from the previous year.

And Axelson says those students are succeeding at higher rates with better overall grade-point averages.

And there was an increase in the number of outreach instruction hours.

The university says women comprise 52.4 percent of total enrollment and men 47.6 percent.
