MILTON, Mass. (AP) - The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a Milton High School senior this week has been identified as a veteran Boston police officer.

Eighteen-year-old Kate Lisa Etienne was struck Wednesday afternoon as she crossed the street on her way to church where she tutored children in an after-school program.

Boston police identified the driver as 44-year-old Sgt. Warren Hoppie, a decorated 20-year veteran of the department. He was off duty at the time.

Investigators say Hoppie tried to swerve to avoid Etienne and stopped at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

Boston police in a statement said he was “deeply saddened about the tragic accident.”

The death remains under investigation.
