RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia General Assembly has elected Henrico County District Court Judge Mary Bennett Malveaux to the state Court of Appeals.

Lawmakers voted Friday to elect Malveaux.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported in 2011 that Malveaux was the first African-American woman to serve full time as a Henrico County District Court judge.

She will fill the vacancy created when the General Assembly elevated Court of Appeals Judge Stephen McCullough to the Virginia Supreme Court on Thursday.
