DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - State environmental officials say they are working with the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct remedial actions at the former Standard Chlorine/Metachem Superfund Site north of Delaware City.

Officials are warning area residents that cleanup work beginning Monday could result in unpleasant odors in the area. The work will be done on weekdays over the next month or so.

Workers will consolidate contaminated soil from the site in a single area that will then be capped as part of ongoing remedial action.

Officials say the soil consolidation work could cause “mothball-type” odors in the area.

Workers will be monitoring for dust and volatile organic compounds along the perimeter of the site to ensure that there is no health risk to the public.
