KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of inmate being held at Benton County jail.

The Tri-City Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1Uo3wk9) the 19-year-old man was being held on three misdemeanor warrants. Officials say he died Friday.

Jail officials suspected he was under the influence of narcotics when he was arrested, and he was placed in a padded cell intended for inmates who are distressed or volatile.

He had yet to appear in court because of escape attempts and threats to harm himself as well as damage property.

He was assessed daily by county mental health staff.

The sheriff’s office says officers checked on the inmate every 30 minutes.

The man was a documented gang member.

Benton County’s sheriff’s office did not name the man Friday pending a meeting with his family.
