TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A Tulsa jury has convicted a 31-year-old man of first-degree murder in the beating death of his roommate.

The Tulsa World reports (bit.ly/1MegVVq) jurors also recommended that Joel Robert Giefer receive life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Ted Wayne Kissel in 2014.

Giefer was the cousin of one of Kissel’s coworkers and had been kicked out by his girlfriend and needed somewhere to stay, so Kissel allowed Giefer to move in with him.

Giefer eventually fell behind on his rent and a few months later, Kissel wanted him to move out.

In December 2014, police responding to a welfare check discovered Kissel’s body underneath a mattress in a bedroom.

Giefer will be sentenced on May 19.
