COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Tyler Nixon scored a game-high 23 points and Tyrone Matthews added 14 as Pocomoke took advantage of free throws to rally for a 64-56 victory over Lake Clifton in the Class 1A state title game.

Saturday’s championship victory was the fourth for Pocomoke, but its first in 14 years.

Kai Thompson had 22 points to lead Lake Clifton (17-11), which lost in the 1A final for a second consecutive year.

Nixon and Matthews missed 12 of 14 shots from the field but fared much better at the free-throw line. Nixon made 18 of 22 foul shots, while Matthews hit all 10 of his.

The Lakers held an early 21-10 lead and stayed in front into the fourth quarter but could not hold on in the final period.

The Warriors (25-3) made 14 of their last 15 free throws while outscoring Lake Clifton 20-6 in the fourth quarter, including the game’s final seven points.

Overall, Pocomoke made 34 of 42 from the line.
