CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (AP) - Runners have to be fast to win the Beach to Beacon. They also have to be fast to get a bib.

Online registration for Maine’s biggest road race opened at 7 a.m. Friday and all 4,000 slots were filled in a record of 3 minutes, 43 seconds. Cape Elizabeth residents who got first dibs a day earlier filled 900 slots in 5 minutes, 24 seconds.

The race isn’t until Aug. 6, but signup is now closed.

The Beach to Beacon 10K road race was founded by Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson of Maine. The finish line is at Fort Williams, home to the Portland Head Light. Last year’s race winners were Stephen Kosgei Kibet of Kenya and Wude Ayalew of Ethiopia.
