SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A South Salt Lake homeowner says he shot and killed an intruder who was armed with a knife in his backyard.

South Salt Lake police were called to a home in the area of 3730 South 200 East around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

They found 68-year-old David Antonio Trujillo shot and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The 37-year-old resident of the home told officers he heard a noise in his yard.

He went to investigate and found the elderly man with a knife.

Police say the confrontation escalated and ended with the homeowner shooting Trujillo.

No arrests have been made.

Police say the homeowner called 911 and is cooperating.

Investigators say they have not found a current address for Trujillo but he frequented various motels in the area.
