ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A man who was driving on a suspended license when he led police on a long chase through two New Jersey towns that ended in a crash has been convicted of eluding.

Union County prosecutors say 37-year-old Antonio Santos, of Mountainside, faces 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced May 6.

The March 2012 chase started when police tried to stop Santos’ vehicle in Mountainside. The pursuit then went back and forth for about five miles between Mountainside and Springfield before Santos crashed just off Route 22.

Santos had claimed at trial that he was pathologically intoxicated on multiple forms of prescription medication when the chase occurred. But the jury rejected that defense after deliberating for about 90 minutes.
