INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis Fire Department says an off-duty firefighter sought help at a mosque after being shot in the torso by an unknown attacker.

Police say 49-year-old Michael “Kevin” Gill was taken to a hospital in good condition after the Sunday morning shooting. Detectives say they believe Gill was shot in the backyard of a home, and then ran across the street to a mosque to elude the suspect. People inside of the mosque helped Gill and called 911.

Police say the armed suspect fled south from the home and never entered the mosque.

An Indianapolis Fire Department spokeswoman says Gill was shot as he was walking to his car after picking up some food from an acquaintance’s house.

Indianapolis Police said earlier Sunday that the victim had been shot in the leg.
