ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) - The mayor of Itta Bena is opposing the potential sale of an industrial park land owned by Itta Bena to Leflore County.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1QW3XxM ) that Mayor Thelma Collins has again expressed reservations about the sale.

The Itta Bena board of aldermen has tried to sell the land in the past.

In May 2015, the board hoped to use proceeds from the sale of the land, which lies near Mississippi Valley State University, to pay off a $200,000 federal tax lien on the municipality. The IRS though abated a large amount of that debt.

Collins says she would like the city to hold on to the land in the hopes of eventually selling it to a large industrial project or installing a solar electricity plant there.

Wayne Self, the supervisor of a county district that includes Itta Bena, said he intends to meet with the board of aldermen on behalf of the county on Tuesday to discuss the possible sale of the land.
