BLANDING, Utah (AP) - Authorities have identified a rock climber who suffered a fatal fall in southern Utah.

KSL-TV of Salt Lake City reports (https://bit.ly/1Uag6Vl) that San Juan County Sheriff Rick Eldredge said 50-year-old Mark Davis was climbing with his girlfriend in Beef Basin Canyon at 7 p.m. Saturday when the fall occurred.

Eldredge says Davis’ equipment somehow failed and he fell 20 feet.

He says Davis suffered head trauma.

Rescue crews and a medical helicopter were dispatched but they pronounced him dead at the scene.

Eldredge says Davis was not wearing protective headgear.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
