WISE, Va. (AP) - A terminal at the Lonesome Pine Airport in Wise County has been named in honor of Francis Gary Powers, the pilot of a U-2 spy plane that was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1Mfbupb ) that the terminal was named at a dedication ceremony Saturday.

Powers grew up in Pound, Virginia. He was captured and interrogated after his plane was shot down. He served less than two years of a 10 year prison sentence before the U.S. released a captured Soviet spy to secure Powers’ release. That exchange is the subject of a recent film, “Bridge of Spies.”

Powers died in 1997 in a helicopter crash in California in 1977.
