ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Cornell University will host a public memorial service later this week for its recently deceased president.

Elizabeth Garrett died of colon cancer March 6 after less than a year on the job. She was 52.

A memorial gathering for Garrett will be held Thursday afternoon in Bailey Hall.

Cornell leaders, family members and friends are expected to speak.

Before becoming Cornell’s president last year, Garrett was a provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Southern California.
