RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - A Riverton man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for trying to kill his wife with a hatchet.

The Riverton Ranger reports (https://bit.ly/1QSpYkg ) that 46-year-old Terry Schmuck on Thursday was sentenced for attempted second-degree murder. He was convicted in November after rejecting a plea agreement.

Prosecutors say Schmuck went to his wife’s home on May 28, cut her telephone wires and then struck her in the head with a hatchet. They argued that Schmuck had been angry with his wife, who survived, because she had served him with divorce papers.

At his sentencing Schmuck said he didn’t intend to kill his wife and that if that had been his intention he wouldn’t have taken her to the hospital and she would be dead.
