OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma’s secretary of finance is walking back comments he made recently on an Oklahoma City radio program in which he referred to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister as a “Democrat in Republican’s clothes.”

Preston Doerflinger (DOR’-fling-ur) said Monday if given the chance, he would “temper those comments.”

Doerflinger made the comments last week on The Alexander Show on radio station KOKC-AM. Doerflinger was voicing frustration at the demise of two voucher bills he supported that would have allowed public funds to be used to send Oklahoma students to private schools.

Doerflinger also said a fiscal analysis of the bills by Hofmeister’s office overinflated the potential cost of the program.

Hofmeister’s office declined to comment on what it called Doerflinger’s “name calling,” but stands by the fiscal analysis.
