HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - A steer roamed the streets of Harrisonburg until police said they fatally shot the animal amid fears it would was heading to a busy part of the city.

Police responded to a call Monday morning of a steer running through a neighborhood. They said they attempted to corral the animal using several police cars.

But police told the Daily News Record (https://bit.ly/1UbL1k4 ) they shot the steer out of concern it would run wild toward busy West Market Street.

Lt. Tom Hoover said it was a shame the animal had to be put down but he said a 1,500-pound steer roaming the streets poses a public safety risk.

Police say the steer got loose from its owners.
