WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Williamsburg police say Mayor Clyde Haulman has been charged with assault and battery.

Maj. Greg Riley said Monday that a summons was issued after a resident filed a complaint with a magistrate. Haulman was served the summons Sunday.

Media outlets report that the complainant said Haulman grabbed him by his tie and shook him. Riley said the alleged incident occurred Thursday in the building where the City Council meets.

He referred questions to Commonwealth’s Attorney Nick Green. The prosecutor said Haulman’s arraignment on the misdemeanor charge has been set for March 29, but he declined further comment.

Haulman referred questions to his attorney, Steve Harris, who did not return messages.
