MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a mother and father were killed and their children injured when an oncoming driver hit their van in Northern California.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1nLcLxX ) that California Highway Patrol says the family was traveling near Discovery Bay on Sunday when an oncoming vehicle swerved into their lane, sending the van off the highway. It overturned in a drainage canal.

The driver and his wife were killed. Their three children, ages 10, 9 and 2, were taken to the hospital for minor injuries and are doing OK.

CHP officer James Claire says a passerby jumped into the canal and pulled the children and a 24-year-old passenger to safety.

Claire says the driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with major injuries.
