HOUSTON (AP) - Authorities say man suspected of trying to carjack another man in a Walgreens parking lot was fatally shot by an off-duty Harris County sheriff’s deputy.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Gilliland said the deputy pulled into the parking lot in northwest Harris County Saturday night when he saw two men involved in what he believed to be a carjacking. Gilliland said the deputy intervened and the suspect came toward him.

Authorities say the deputy and the suspect fell to the ground and a struggle ensued. Gilliland said that the deputy discharged his Taser before the suspect grabbed it and punched the deputy.

Police say the deputy pushed the man off of him and the two continued to fight. Gilliland said the deputy fired his weapon three times, striking the suspect.
