GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A jury has sentenced a former Galveston Police Department cadet to 27 years in prison for fatally shooting her boyfriend.

Twenty-four-year-old Claudia Kristine Esquivel was convicted Monday of shooting and killing 27-year-old Christopher Chapa in June 2014.

Esquivel’s attorney, Greg Russell, argued that his client pointed what she thought was an unloaded gun at Chapa in self-defense. Prosecutors said the former cadet scored well in her academy weapons class and knew the gun was loaded.

Esquivel graduated from Galveston College’s Law Enforcement Academy just weeks before the shooting.

Esquivel was also given a $10,000 fine, the maximum allowed by the law. She had faced a possible prison term of five to 99 years in the case.
