UNION, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey lawmaker is calling for an investigation of Kean University following a report that the school hired a consultant with a criminal record and questionable resume to examine racial bias at the school.

The Record newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/22fYnRx ) state Sen. Kevin O’Toole on Monday urged the state attorney general to investigate the hiring of Michael Blackwell. He says the hiring of Blackwell at a public university raised questions about the school’s personnel procedures.

Blackwell was hired to do a “compliance review” of hiring and enrollment at Kean.

The university hasn’t answered questions about its vetting process. It says Blackwell’s experience with “various economic development projects” in the state qualified him for the assignment.
