JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Ridgecrest, Louisiana woman has pleaded guilty to forgery and theft from a senior citizen in her care.

Attorney General Jim Hood says 30-year-old Nicole Mata appeared before Judge Forrest A. Johnson in Adams County Circuit Court Monday. Johnson sentenced her to five years in prison but suspended three years. She was also ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution to the victim.

Hood says hopefully the sentence will deter others from taking advantage of elderly Mississippians.

Investigators say Mata, while working as a domestic helper for a Natchez senior citizen, forged a check on the victim’s account and stole some of that person’s jewelry.
