PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A Paterson man has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of a man who initially was thought to have overdosed before he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole.

Davine Campbell entered his pleas Tuesday during his initial court appearance. He remains jailed on $2.5 million bail.

The 22-year-old Campbell faces murder, weapons and drug possession charges stemming from the March 4 shooting of Justin Pease in Paterson.

Authorities say the Stanhope man managed to drive several blocks from the scene of the shooting before he crashed.

Pease was found dead inside the vehicle, and authorities initially thought he had overdosed. But the case became a homicide investigation after authorities found a bullet wound.

A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
