LOS ANGELES (AP) - The city of Los Angeles is facing a federal civil rights lawsuit claiming it has endangered its homeless residents by seizing and destroying their belongings.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/22hFhXx ) the suit filed Monday was brought by Carol Sobel, who has won several cases against the city over its homeless policies.

According to the suit, Judy Coleman, who suffers from arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure, was arrested in February on suspicion of possession of a stolen shopping cart. She was jailed for two days then released without medication and later hospitalized with pneumonia.

The suit seeks a court order requiring the city to replace blankets, tents, medication and other items seized for any reason.

A spokesman for City Atty. Mike Feuer says the office would review the suit.
